The President's Corner

Members of the Martinsburg Historical Society were busy in 2017 with several projects. Several members, along with some interested people from the community, spent many hours at the Maple Ridge Cemetery clearing debris and cleaning stones. The society contracted with Artisan Engraving for repair and straightening of many of the stones and monuments.
The Twins Wide Open Golf Tournament was a huge success as was the annual Martinsburg Day. New activities on Martinsburg Day included a miniature golf course and a nickel dish toss. The antique and classic car “cruise-in” set a record for attendance.

The society was honored during the year to have its “Brick Building” added to both the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places. The building was constructed in 1847 to house the Lewis County Clerk’s Office and was purchased by the society several years ago. In 2018 a major renovation will address some structural concerns and stabilize the building to insure that it continues to be an historic site attraction for future generations to appreciate.

Items of historic significance to the Town of Martinsburg continue to be added to the society’s collection. A goal of society members is to acquire a building large enough to house and display its growing inventory.
